Japanese Home Interior Design
Greene & Greene, the famed architect-brother duo behind iconic Arts & Crafts residences in Ca, in a variety of ways paralleled Japanese Mingei structure by trying to standard Japanese homes as inspiration—except through lens of industrialization. Notably, the duo's constant utilization of timber trellising in the early 20th-century demonstrates the connection to Mingei, a Japanese folk design activity within the 1920s and 30s. Therefore perhaps it is not surprising that over 40 years ago, after both motions had passed, Yasuhiro Ishimoto, a photographer working for Japanese design magazine Approach, took notice by shooting 1, 000 images of the brothers’ domestic designs, including 600 of famed Gamble home alone.
To celebrate Ishimoto's commitment towards the Greenes, San Marino, California’s Huntington Library gift suggestions “Yasuhiro Ishimoto: Bilingual photographer therefore the Architecture of Greene & Greene, ” on view June 18 through October 3. At least 46 of the black-and-white Gamble House pictures is showcased beside six regarding the seldom snapped 17th century Katsura Imperial Villa in Japan. The program highlights the stylistic overlap the photographer sensed between two cultural realms, the influence of old-fashioned Japanese work on United states design during its very early industrialization, and, in turn, on Japan’s own commercial duration after World War II.
